They’re set for a new low this season with the 20-time English top-flight champions currently occupying the 16th spot with just one game to go. And even if they win their final game, against Aston Villa on Sunday and Wolves and Aston Villa lose their matches, United will finish no higher than 13th.

Amorim, thus, might end up becoming the face of United’s worst finish in Premier League history even if he wasn’t in charge for the entire duration, with the United management having given Ten Hag three months to fix the sinking ship before finally releasing him on 28 October .
The 40-year-old former Portugal midfielder though, can claim credit to steering United into the Europa League final, where they face fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham Hotspur at Bilbao’s San Mamés Stadium following victories over Lyon and Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

And the club management might just be eager to see how Amorim rebuilds the squad during the summer transfer window and the direction he steers the team towards in the next season.
