On Monday night, reports from Italian media suggested that Jurgen Klopp had agreed to become AS Roma’s new manager, marking a surprising return to football management almost exactly one year after his departure from Liverpool.
According to Italian publication La Stampa, Klopp had reportedly given his approval to take charge of the Serie A side.
The German coach, who left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season citing concerns about “running out of energy,” appears to have had a change of heart regarding his break from management.
The news came as a significant surprise to the football world, as Klopp has been serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer since January 1, 2025, a role that was widely expected to keep him away from day-to-day management for a longer period.
The 57-year-old had previously indicated his desire for an extended break from the pressures of club management when departing Anfield last year.
Jurgen Klopp, since taking up his role as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer in January, has been focused on providing strategic leadership across Red Bull’s international network of football clubs.
He has been spotted at New York Red Bulls in the United States and at Red Bull Bragantino in Brazil
But now Jurgen Klopp’s agent, Mark Kosicke, has now come out to deny the reports linking his client to Roma, saying to WinWin Sports:
“The news about Klopp becoming Roma’s next head coach is not true.”
Klopp has a long-term contract with Red Bull that runs until the end of 2029
Claudio Ranieri is stepping down after serving as Roma’s caretaker manager since November 2024.
Under Ranieri’s guidance, Roma enjoyed a remarkable 19-game unbeaten streak, which has kept their Champions League hopes alive.
The club currently sits fifth in Serie A with 66 points and could still qualify for the Champions League if Juventus drops points in the final round and Roma defeats Torino in their last match.
