**Newcastle United can cross one player off their summer wishlist, if indeed he was genuinely on it to begin with.**
Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha had been linked with Newcastle for months in the media, but it may all just be speculation based on his form for Wolves, the position he plays and the fact that he seems to be quite friendly with Bruno Guimaraes. But that's all journalists need to create a story, really.
Matheus Cunha would obviously have been a good signing for Newcastle, but it never really felt like a deal we'd do.
Not that it matters any more if transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano is to be believed.

Matheus Cunha looks set to become a Manchester United player
------------------------------------------------------------
Romano posted on X yesterday that the deal was almost done with just the personal terms to be ironed out before posting an update today (Tuesday) that everything is close to completion.
> "More on Matheus Cunha exclusive story. Man United are set to approach also Wolves to proceed with £62.5m release clause payment in installments."The deal is almost done on player side as revealed yesterday, with final details being clarified.

We expect Newcastle have other targets in mind that tick more boxes than Cunha
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The main reason we aren't convinced Newcastle were really in for Cunha is simply that he has chosen to go to Manchester United. Surely if Newcastle was an option, he'd come here over that mess, right?
His release clause of £62.5 million puts him at what we expect would be the very top end of what we'd be willing to spend on one player this summer, so if there's a chance of picking up a winger of a similar quality for less, we'd likely be exploring that avenue anyway.
While it is fun to keep digging at Manchester United, we imagine Cunha is thinking that the only way is up for them right now and he can be a big part of that. I mean, I hope he's wrong, but there has to be some method to the madness.
