Manchester United legend demands that the club keep “struggling” academy stars

Manchester United legend David Beckham hates the idea of selling academy players to bolster the transfer budget during the summer. United are facing financial trouble and could use the sales of promising young players to bolster their summer transfer fund.

Man United have experienced a horrible campaign, starting under Erik ten Hag until Ruben Amorim succeeded him as the manager. The Red Devils are currently 16th in the Premier League table, well below the level which their immense stature demands.

Man United have lost 18 Premier League games, drawing nine, as they have accumulated just 39 points from 37 matches. Amorim installed a new tactical style of play, but the team he inherited has failed to adjust to the demands.

The former Sporting CP manager needs significant financial backing from the club to get the players he wants. However, United are facing a financial restriction due to its frivolous spending in the past, which has also unbalanced the wage expenses.

While United cannot buy new players before selling, most of their surplus players hold little value. The situation has forced the club to think about selling academy players who have secured their place in the team.

Speaking to The Athletic, Beckham revealed that he hates when Man United sell well-established academy players. He said:

“I also hate any young player who has grown up at United leaving the club. We shouldn’t be selling players purely for financial reasons. It should be what they are doing on the field and if they’re not performing, there’s always a chance — we all knew that, I knew that. If I wasn’t performing on the pitch, it didn’t matter what I’d done in the past or what I was going to do in the future; there was a good chance that I was either going to get left on the bench, or I was going to get sold. I’d like to think that Manchester United don’t sell players that have grown up at the club, understand and love the club. I don’t want to see players leave Manchester United if they care about United like I do.”

United have Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo representing the academy at the topmost level regularly in recent seasons. While Diallo has enjoyed fantastic cameos and a starting role, his injury record has hindered his development at the club.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old secures his place in the senior team after enjoying a good run under Amorim. At the same time, Garnacho has struggled with inconsistency in his performance and also with his goal contribution.

Meanwhile, Mainoo remains one of the bright midfield talents at United, but he has also struggled with fitness and consistency. In an ideal situation, United give their players more chances before passing judgment, but they sorely lack that time.
