Steven Gerrard could be about to return to the dugout very soon. Reports say he is the preferred candidate to become Rangers head coach for the new season. The 44-year-old has not managed since January when he left Saudi club Al-Ettifaq. He was on a high wage with very good support in the transfer market. But, his stay in the Gulf did not go to plan.
The stint at Aston Villa wasn’t even for a year. The doubts rose about his potential to take the team forward in the Premier League. Although, he enjoyed success at Rangers though between 2018 and 2021. In which he had an unbeaten season there and won the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21. That achievement was historic for a reason. They won a silverware for the first time in 10 years. In addition, they also denied their rivals Celtic a record tenth consecutive title.

Experience is a key requirement for the new role. So, Gerrard is leading the list. Meanwhile, other names like Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti have also been floated. But, Gerrard’s previous success at Ibrox and leadership qualities give him a strong edge.
