Aston Villa could join the race to sign Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher with Emiliano Martinez’s future in doubt.
Liverpool stopper Kelleher is set to leave Anfield this summer following the arrival of Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. Kelleher, who has a year left on his contract, is seeking first-team football after playing second fiddle to Alisson.
Martinez’s future in the Midlands was thrown into doubt on Friday when he appeared to give a tearful farewell to supporters following Aston Villa’s victory over Tottenham.
The Argentina international has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United, who have lost faith in Andre Onana. Barcelona and teams in the Saudi Pro League are also monitoring his availability.
Kelleher, 26, has reiterated his desire to play regular football having impressed during Alisson’s absence with injury. He has played 20 times across all competitions this season, but is aware opportunities will continue to be limited under Arne Slot.
Competition for Kelleher could drive up his valuation. Brighton and Leeds are also considering their options with keepers on the summer transfer agenda.
Leeds are looking for a new stopper on their return to the Premier League to upgrade Illian Meslier, who was dropped towards the end of the campaign. Brighton’s keeper Bart Verbruggen is currently on Real Madrid’s wishlist.
Ireland manager’s transfer message
Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson sent a transfer message to Kelleher ahead of an uncertain summer, advising him to seek first-team football.
He told the Irish Echo: “I just want Caoimhin to go to a club where he will play. He has been playing at the highest level.
“Champions League, Premier League, he’s done really well. I just want him to be happy and play regularly. I don’t mind where he goes so long as he is playing on a regular basis, he is too good not to be playing.”
Kelleher has made it no secret of his desire to play regularly. Towards the end of last year, he said: “I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be number one and play week in, week out.”
