Leicester City have been hit with charges by the Premier League over suspected financial infringements during their 2023-24 campaign.
An independent commission is set to hear the case, focusing on assertions that Leicester broke profitability and sustainability regulations whilst playing in the Championship last season. The Foxes won the title and Ipswich Town secured the second automatic promotion spot as Leeds United were forced to settle for a place in the play-offs. Daniel Farke's troops came up short in the final at Wembley, losing 1-0 to Southampton.
Should the Foxes be convicted, they could face a points deduction as they prepare to rejoin the second tier after being relegated.
This development marks yet another legal confrontation for the Midlands club with the Premier League; earlier this season, they triumphed in an appeal which blocked the League from imposing charges for allegedly flouting the same financial rules in the 2022-23 season.
Leicester had argued the Premier League didn't have the authority to charge them for that period since they were active in the Championship.
Despite the Premier League contesting Leicester's victorious appeal, a tribunal sided with the club, determining that the challenge by the League did not meet the threshold it had set.
In response, the Premier League amended its statutes, sealing the loophole to prevent repeat scenarios.
Following the closure of this earlier dispute, the league has initiated fresh proceedings based on purported violations for the 2023-24 term.
Additional accusations cast at the club involve neglecting to submit their annual accounts to the Premier League by the deadline of 31 December 2024 and failing to provide "full, complete and prompt assistance" amid the League's investigative efforts.
A statement from Leicester read: "Consistent with its previous commitments, the club intends to engage cooperatively in this matter now that the Premier League's jurisdiction has been established for the period ending FY24.
"However, we will not be able to comment further on these proceedings until they are concluded, due to their confidential nature."
