Aston Villa are looking to ready their squad for a bright future, but couldn’t land this young star
With Champions League qualification still a firm possibility heading into the final weekend of the season, Aston Villa are looking to prepare their squad for a future as one of England’s elite clubs.
Villa have seen the ultimate transformation since the arrival of Unai Emery in October 2022, arriving out of nowhere in his first season in charge to qualify for the UEFA Conference League and compete in European football for the first time in 13 years.
They went one better the following campaign, pipping Tottenham Hotspur to fourth in the table and Champions League qualification inspired by near-flawless home form at Villa Park.
Early setback as wonderkid rejects Villa Park
Aston Villa have been dealt an early blow in the transfer market as their advances to sign an U18 Premier League star have fallen through, with the starlet deciding to remain at current club Spurs. Ellis Lehane, 18, has been in eye-catching form this season for Spurs’ U18s, attracting firm interest from Villa, Brentford and Norwich in addition to Italian clubs Lecce, Verona and Cagliari.
Lehane has registered 13 goals in 21 U18 Premier League matches this season and has begun to be integrated into the club’s U21 side. The starlet aims to follow in the footsteps of club legend and England captain Harry Kane and force his way into the first team, knowing all too well that Kane’s own career path preaches patience in the early stages.
Rather than take the early leap elsewhere, the 2006-born forward has decided North London is the best place for him to take the next step in his young career, citing 17-year-old Mikey Moore as proof of the opportunities available to break into the Spurs first team under Ange Postecoglou.
In a clip posted to YouTube, Lehane showed his youthful energy when expressing his delight at scoring a hat-trick for Spurs U18s in a 7-0 victory at Leicester U18. He said: “Happy to get three points and three goals. Onto the next game. Come on you Spurs!”
Prolific young striker just what Villa need?
While at just 18 Lehane was certainly a move for the future, Villa could do worse than going in for a young striker to provide competition to Ollie Watkins, who has been the Villains’ top scorer in each of his four seasons at the club.
Such is Watkins’ prowess and importance to the club, Villa’s last attempt at doing this backfired as 21-year-old Jhon Durán opted for a move to Saudi Arabia rather than a role as often Villa’s “super-sub”.
Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford were brought in on loan in January in addition to the permanent signing of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund to add firepower to the Villa front-line. But with 29-year-old Watkins often linked with moves away, it is imperative that Villa begin to prepare for the future.
