Newcastle United transfer target says 'yes' to Manchester United move - deal almost done

Newcastle United are set to strengthen their squad in this summer’s transfer window - but there’s one player to cross off the list.

Matheus Cunha only signed a new contract at Wolverhampton Wanderers in February but is very close to seeing his £62.5million release clause activated after again starring at Molineux this season with 17 goals in 34 appearances.

The 25-year-old’s versatility and goal record since joining Wolves from Atletico Madrid two-and-a-half years ago made him an attractive target for Newcastle. However, Cunha has already decided on his next destination.

However, Cunha could still be playing Champions League football next season if Ruben Amorim’s side beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night. But regardless of the outcome, Cunha wants to move to Old Trafford.

Romano wrote on X: “Manchester United are now closing in on Matheus Cunha deal! The Brazilian has accepted the project as agreement on personal terms is now being finalised, almost done. Final details to sort between all parties involved… and then, here we go.

“Man United are set to approach also Wolves to proceed with £62.5m release clause payment in installments. The deal is almost done on player side as revealed yesterday, with final details being clarified. Cunha said YES.”

Newcastle United preparing for ‘big’ summer transfer window

Newcastle have gone three consecutive transfer windows without making a major signing and instead have resorted to offloading players in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Magpies were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively, just hours before the PSR deadline on June 30. In January, further sales were sanctioned as Miguel Almiron re-joined Atlanta United while Lloyd Kelly moved to Juventus on loan with a £20million obligation to buy this summer.

Despite weakening the squad, Howe’s side have won the Carabao Cup - ending the club’s 56-year trophy drought - and will qualify for next season’s Champions League if they beat Everton on the final day of the season on Sunday.

The summer transfer window is a big opportunity to build on that success and Howe is confident the club will be in a position to finally strengthen his squad. Newcastle have a centre-back, right forward and goalkeeper at the top of their priority list.

Howe said last week: "Regular success, consistent success, all these things help you in the journey that you're on to show to everybody that that's where the club's ambition is.

"There's no doubt that's what the club's ambition is. But of course, as we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR, but those issues aren't there for the coming window. So I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves."
