Oliver Glasner and his Crystal Palace side still have plenty to play for in the Premier League ahead of taking on Wolves and Liverpool.
Crystal Palace will be welcomed home by a jubilant Selhurst Park crowd tonight in south London as Wolves visit in Premier League action. It’s the first match back since last weekend’s historic FA Cup final win at Wembley Stadium.
There will be a party atmosphere at Selhurst Park but Oliver Glanser will be determined not to let the festivities distract his side from the task at hand. Crystal Palace still have the chance to climb up the table and finish the campaign in 11th, rather than their current placement of 12th.
Everton are in 13th but cannot catch the Eagles with a four point gap opened up and the Toffees only having one match left this term. There are four points between Crystal Palace and AFC Bournemouth in 11th.
Crystal Palace still playing for Premier League prize money
The Cherries also have two matches left to play, facing Manchester City at the Eithad Stadium tonight before ending the campaign against Leicester City at home. If Andoni Iraola’s men beat Manchester City, Crystal Palace will not be able to catch them. However, lose to Pep Gardiola’s men and Glasner’s side can still climb above Bournemouth.
If Iraola’s side were to lose to Manchester City and fail to beat Leicester City, Crystal Palace would move to 11th with wins over Wolves and Liverpool. While one place in mid table may not seem like a lot, it could give the London outfit another £3 million to spend in the transfer window.
Last season, top flight clubs received a total of £2.84 billion, which comprised of six payments through a central revenue system. For the 2023/24 season, Football 365 reports that the difference in prize money for each Premier League position was around £2.8 million.
This differs each season - it was £3.1 million in 2022/23 - but can offer a rough guide of how much each Premier League club will have injected into their finances ahead of the summer window. If the Premier League was to finish right now, AFC Bournemouth would receive £28.2 million with Crystal Palace awarded £25.4 million.
Oliver Glasner eyes record Premier League points tally
Glasner is determined to lead his Crystal Palace side to a record tally of Premier League points over the final two fixtures. To do that, the club must pick up just one more point to go better than 49 points. Ahead of facing Wolves, the manager said: “A few weeks ago, everybody was talking about the semi-final, about the Final and then I said to the players, ‘OK, if we achieve a new points record, then you get two more days off’! And they wanted it now after winning the FA Cup.
“And I said: ‘no, no, one point [to break our Premier League points record] means two days, so there's still this motivation – let's see if this maybe helps a little bit.
“It helped definitely in the last weeks because we had very good performances always, because we were wondering how the players could deal with the situation. They were excellent with this. But now, of course, now it's the biggest achievement [winning the Cup] and then a lot of tension just drops. And then again, they are all human beings with all these emotions.
“It's sometimes not so easy that you can get the turnaround within two days. That's why I was really fighting for getting the Wolves game on Thursday, not on Tuesday. But sometimes you can shout against the wind and nobody hears it, and this happened in this case.
“We have to play this game tomorrow. It's our last home game. I think it's also something where we will have a great atmosphere at Selhurst. Many fans are still celebrating, and then it's also what they deserve, and then finding a great end of the season at home, this is what we will go for.”
