Newcastle United set 'ridiculous' asking price for Anthony Gordon amid fan backlash

Anthony Gordon is coming in for a lot of flak right now after another poor performance against Arsenal on Sunday.

We covered yesterday that there are a lot of fans on social media starting to turn on Gordon after a poor season, and while it is a minority, the calls to sell are indeed there.

There's even an idea among some fans that Gordon doesn't want to be at Newcastle and that's why his performances have been so below par, but as we said yesterday, that simply doesn't make sense given the heaps of evidence to the contrary, not least the fact he's just signed a new deal at the club.

We'll likely never find out the real reason why his form has dropped so significantly, but when you factor in the fact that he's barely had a rest for over two years, then it's not hard to put two and two together here.

Anthony Gordon has been 'off' this season but it's no reason to write him off

Newcastle would demand £100m to consider selling Anthony Gordon

As Luke Edwards reports in The Telegraph, Newcastle have no intention of selling Anthony Gordon, while Mark Douglas, writing for the iPaper adds that the player doesn't want to leave, but that won't stop clubs from looking, wishing, wanting.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea are said to have an eye on Gordon, with the former linked with a move last summer when Newcastle were scrambling to make ends meet for PSR, but while they reportedly value Gordon at £80 million, and Edwards believes it would take 'ridiculous money' to get Newcastle to budge.

Indeed, he says that a figure of £100 million might get them to contemplate selling.

It doesn't make sense for Anthony Gordon to want to leave Newcastle right now

However, as Edwards goes on to say, why would Gordon want to leave? Newcastle are flying right now and getting stronger. It won't be long before we're regular challengers for titles, and why would a player want to leave that project when they could etch their name in a club's history?

We can only hope that Anthony Gordon is given plenty of time off this summer so he can fully relax and get his focus back for next season.

First, though, we'd really appreciate it if he could actually turn up and put in a performance against his old club for once on Sunday. He hasn't really given us much to cheer about against Everton since his switch, and Sunday is huge.

It is time to stand up and be counted.
