When Ruben Amorim predicted choppy waters for Manchester United - a group of fans probably didn't expect it to be them, a small boat and the Bay of Biscay.

The Red Devils, despite slipping and sliding down the Premier League, have found themselves in the Europa League final against a similarly stuttering Spurs side.

And rather than jet from Manchester Airport to Bilbao - a group of United fans decided to take the scenic route. To say the least!

"En-Route to Bilbao. Over bay of Biscay, should arrive Tuesday night," the seafaring group of fans posted on social media as they made their way down a canal.

United fans had risked being priced out of the trip, the Daily Mail reported as of 8am BST on Friday (May 21), the cheapest plane ticket, from Manchester to Bilbao, (that arrives two or more hours before kick-off) costs £524, with a stop in Munich on the way.

To return from Bilbao, the cheapest flight on May 22 costs £446, departing at around mid-day with a stop in Lisbon, Portugal, on the way. There was a direct fight back to Manchester, which would set fans back £941.

And it was those prices, which don't even take into account the cost a hotel, that led the group to brave the big blue.

An update on Monday read: "Morning sports fans. Le Palais to Bordeaux today. Then onto Bilbao tomorrow. Better phone signal on the moon. Yesterday was Lorient where she’s based."

However, a couple of hours later, disaster would strike - and by disaster, there was a shortage of beer: "Absolute nightmare! Cans are running low. Need more BBQ food too!"

Crisis was averted when they fired up the pizza oven.

The latest update, coming in the early hours of Tuesday morning, read: "In Bilbao in about 7 hours. Up the f****** reds!"

"That’s absolutely f****** mental fair play," one fan joked. While a second said: "Not a fanbase on earth like ours man, absolutely mental. Some club!"

However, one rival fan quipped: "Try hard FC at it again going to Spain via Papa New Guinea to save £25 and get a few E likes..."

Around 47,000 fans are expected to make the journey to the Basque Country, with each club being allocated 15,000 tickets for the night at San Mames.

The 17,000 ticketless fans will be hoping to find a bar and cheer their team to unlikely European glory.
