Bruno Guimaraes tells Newcastle United chiefs the type of player he wants signed this summer

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has made one thing clear about the summer transfer window in a revealing interview.

The Magpies are on the cusp of Champions League qualification for a second time in three seasons, but must beat Everton at St James’ Park on the final day of the Premier League season to secure it.

Thankfully for Eddie Howe’s side, the odds are in their favour as Chelsea take on Nottingham Forest who are both fighting for a place in the top five.

Despite Newcastle United losing 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday, pundits are still backing the Magpies to finish in the top five and avoid any final-day shocks.

Alan Shearer remains confident in Newcastle after the defeat, although he admitted it will be a tense finale to what has been an exciting Premier League season.

Newcastle are set to be busy in the summer transfer window, with sporting director Paul Mitchell set to welcome several players through the doors on Tyneside.

With new signings in the pipeline, Bruno Guimaraes has told Mitchell exactly what he expects those signings to be.

Bruno Guimaraes discusses Newcastle United’s transfers

Guimaraes was one of the first players to join the club after the takeover in October 2021, joining from Lyon for a £40m fee.

The Brazilian has gone on to become Newcastle’s captain and lift the club’s first domestic trophy since 1955. Guimaraes has taken the role as Newcastle captain in his stride, showing Howe was right to give him the armband for the 2024/25 season.

Newcastle are in a good place at the moment, but new signings would allow them to push on and challenge for more silverware next season. That is also felt by Guimaraes, who has urged the club to make some major signings this summer.

When asked whether Newcastle need more help for Europe next season, Guimaraes said: “Definitely, we have experienced it before. Last season we played on Wednesdays, Saturdays. We missed the players. Last season, we had 12, 13 players injured.

“I think this cost our qualification for the Champions League in my point of view. If we qualify, I think we have to add more. I don’t know how many players, but we have to make it bigger with more experienced players.

“Like the gaffer said, let’s see what’s going to happen, but like I said, I’m very excited for the future of this club and I hope I’m gonna be a part of it.”

Paul Mitchell will listen to Bruno Guimaraes’ Newcastle United transfer plea

Newcastle have failed to make any meaningful additions to their first team since the start of the 2023/24 season, where the likes of Sandro Tonali and Lewis Hall were brought to the club.

The Champions League is considered a game-changer at Newcastle by officials who are ready to spend the £150m transfer kitty this summer.

Newcastle need Champions League football to sign their top targets, and Mitchell is well aware of that.

It has been stated that the club have separate transfer plans if they qualify for the Champions League. Newcastle will sign experienced players for the Champions League, but they will opt for younger talents if they end up in the Europa League or Conference League.

Several big names have been linked with moves to Tyneside this summer, including Bryan Mbeumo and Marc Guehi. With the transfer window opening in three weeks’ time, fans are starting to get excited at the prospect of new additions at Newcastle.
