Real Madrid transfer placed on hold due to Manchester United

Manchester United are preparing for a season-defining Europa League final as Ruben Amorim eyes his first piece of silverware in charge.

With several players expected to move on this summer, United’s backroom staff have been busy drawing up lists of potential replacements and resolving outstanding contract matters.

The club is also assessing the future of its former players, with a number of decisions to be finalised after the European final.

Among the most interesting cases is that of Alvaro Carreras, whose performances at Benfica have not gone unnoticed in Spain — especially at Real Madrid.

Alvaro Carreras, a former United academy player, is currently at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war involving Real Madrid, Benfica, and Manchester United — and it’s the Reds who hold a key advantage.

The 21-year-old Spanish left-back has reportedly made it clear he only wants to join Real Madrid, but his potential move is not as straightforward as expected.

While Madrid have agreed personal terms with the player, they have deliberately avoided entering talks with Manchester United — and with good reason.

When United sold Carreras to Benfica last summer, they inserted a buy-back clause valid until 31 December.

Though United aren’t planning to trigger it, the clause still gives them a position of leverage in any future transfer.

Benfica and the player’s agent, Gines Carvajal, have been tasked with resolving the issue with United, as Madrid do not want to negotiate directly with the Premier League side.

The situation has put the brakes on an official announcement, with United making it clear they won’t consider anything until after their Europa League final is out of the way, as per Marca.

Despite the holdup, sources in Spain suggest that the deal is still expected to go through — but not without some form of compensation heading to Old Trafford.

Madrid, impressed by Carreras’ development in Portugal and his appearances in the Champions League, have already ruled out other left-back options as they await resolution.

For now, Carreras’ childhood dream of returning to the Bernabeu remains on pause — and Manchester United are the ones holding the keys.
