Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the running for an Argentine teenager who looks set to be on the move this summer

Fresh from a second half of the season almost as good as anyone in the Premier League, Wolverhampton Wanderers are heading into the summer with cautious optimism, knowing that their transfer business could still go one of two ways.

But Wolves know they boast their own strengths in the transfer market - not only as an established Premier League club, which is a big enough advantage as it is, but due to the club’s well-known Portuguese and South American links which have been built throughout the Molineux outfit’s time in the top flight.

These connections could be coming to the fore once again as Wolves have been linked with a South American wonderkid who could be available this summer, though the Premier League side will have to compete with a host of Europe’s top clubs for his signature.

Ole’s headline simply reads “the boy is going to Europe”, going on to state that 18-year-old Montoro is “close to leaving” with his current contract expiring in December. Vélez Sarsfield’s attempts to tie him down to a new deal have been unsuccessful, meaning a European club could have the opportunity to sign Montoro for just a €12m (£10.1m) release clause this summer.

Montoro is a professional head on young shoulders, believes his manager

Montoro has struck three goals and an assist in just 120 minutes in the Copa Libertadores, and will be seen as a bright star for the future for the club which does manage to secure his services, amidst comparisons with Andres Iniesta. Speaking after a 2-1 Libertadores victory over Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol last month, Vélez manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto praised Montoro after he scored a 95th-minute winner just weeks before his 18th birthday.

Barros Schelotto said: “That Álvaro Montoro, at 17, and Maher Carrizo, at 19 years old, can behave like professionals of 100 matches... In front of them were players with a lot of experience, from Europe, the Uruguayan national team, and we managed to be professional to the level of Peñarol.”
