Newcastle United defender Sven Botman responded to the news on social media.
Lille have lost a second high-profile player to a free transfer - and both have been linked with Newcastle United.
Gomes joined the Ligue 1 side from Manchester United in 2020 but spent his first season on loan at Portuguese side Boavista. Since then, the 24-year-old has gone on to make over 100 appearances for Lille and made his senior England debut last year.
A mix of injuries and a loss of form has restricted Gomes to just four league appearances in 2025 - his last coming in March - but interest in his signature remains high with West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs linked.
Angel Gomes pens farewell message to Lille - Newcastle United star replies
Penning his farewell message on Instagram, Gomes wrote: “After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it's time for me to say goodbye. This club has been more than just a team — it's been a family, a home, and a place that has shaped me both on and off the pitch.
“Like any journey, there were ups and downs, highs and lows, but I'm truly grateful to my teammates and the fans for sticking with me throughout.
“I'm proud of what we achieved together and thankful for every moment. To the fans — thank you for your amazing support and for believing in me. I will forever be grateful. I always gave everything I had for the badge and for all of you. Lille will always have a special place in my heart.”
Newcastle centre-back Sven Botman, who played alongside Gomes in France before his £35million move to St James’ Park in 2023, commented on the post saying “Myy broskii❤️”
How likely are Newcastle United to sign Jonathan David or Angel Gomes?
After scoring 109 goals in 232 appearances for Lille, David is one of the most sought-after free agent strikers in Europe, meaning it is extremely unlikely the Canadian international would settle for being second choice behind Alexander Isak.

For all the constant noise surrounding Isak’s future, the Swede is expected to stay at St James’ Park this summer. An astronomical offer could leave Newcastle with a decision to make but even then, that might not be enough.
Meanwhile, the midfield is currently well-stocked, although it is an area that the Magpies could address later in the transfer window if Sean Longstaff or Joe Willock were to leave. By that time. Gomes will have likely already found a new club.
As it stands, United are prioritising signing a centre-back, right forward and goalkeeper. Transfer plans are set to be dictated by whether Howe’s side secure Champions League qualification this weekend.
