Old Trafford has long been the subject of ridicule from rival fans – whether it’s leaking roofs, outdated facilities, or a general sense of decay.

Despite being one of football’s most iconic stadiums, its aging infrastructure continues to draw criticism.

And while Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have unveiled plans for a major stadium overhaul, the current reality remains far from modern.

The latest blow?

Manchester United have once again been handed a two-star food hygiene rating, as per Daily Mail’s report, following the discovery of mouse droppings in multiple hospitality areas across the stadium.

Mouse spotted again as Manchester United hit with two star rating

Environmental health experts carried out their most recent inspection in mid-April, with Mail Sport obtaining details of the findings.

Mouse droppings were discovered in seven separate locations at Old Trafford, including premium lounges such as the Ambassador Lounge, the Manchester Suite.

As well as the Number 7 Suite – some even found beneath buffet bars.

The Manchester Suite reportedly had a “large number of droppings,” and with hospitality packages costing around £600 per person in that area, the news is particularly damaging.

Similarly, the No 7 Suite – marketed by the club as one of the stadium’s “most stylish spaces” – was also affected.

United’s food hygiene rating had already dropped from four stars to two last November.

Despite months of internal efforts to restore that figure, this latest inspection confirms that progress has been limited.

A Manchester United spokesperson responded: “Manchester United implements a robust pest-control system throughout Old Trafford.

“Multiple weekly checks are made in all catering areas and stringent measures are taken to ensure levels of hygiene and cleanliness are high wherever food is stored, prepared and served.

“If incidences of this nature do occur at the stadium, immediate and appropriate action is taken.”

Old Trafford hosts more than 250,000 guests at its hospitality and dining venues annually.

Thus, making food safety an increasingly critical concern.

The stadium’s 29 kitchens make consistency difficult.

Other problems noted in the report include general cleanliness and improper food labelling.

One cited example involved a container of pesto labelled with a one-month expiry date.

That is despite manufacturer guidance stating it must be used within eight days.

Daily Mail’s report state these issues are being addressed immediately.

Despite the concerning findings, inspectors did acknowledge that “significant work has taken place to control the mice activity on site.”

However, urged the club to “persevere with the measures being implemented to eradicate activity within food areas.”

Trafford Council has been contacted for further comment.

Ratcliffe, back in early 2024, spoke of the ‘unacceptable’ cleanliness standards at Old Trafford.

A damning situation the club have proactively been looking to avoid.
