'I'm not ready': Callum Wilson discusses his future in football after series of injuries at…

A couple of years ago, Callum Wilson was the main man up front for Newcastle United, but then along came Alexander Isak and a series of unfortunate injuries.

Newcastle's No. 9 has been a fantastic servant for the Magpies, and his strike rate has been among the best we've had since Alan Shearer hung up his boots.

However, a string of injuries over the last couple of seasons has massively hampered his time at the club, and as a result, Wilson hasn't scored a Premier League goal this season.

With his contract coming to an end this summer, the question is: What's next for Callum Wilson?

Callum Wilson still has the hunger

Callum Wilson still has the love of the game and wants to continue

Speaking on the High Performance podcast, Callum Wilson has admitted he's not ready to call time on his career and is more than happy to continue, wherever that may be.

“I’m comfortable now. Financially, thankfully, I’m stable so that’s not an issue.

“I know I’m still able to provide for my family and put food on the table for them. I know my worth and I know my value and I’m still so hungry inside that even though I know Alex [Isak] is scoring goals, I’m still frustrated when the team sheet comes out and I’m not starting so I know I’m not ready to leave football yet.

“I’d love to leave football before football leaves me, I’d never let an injury stop me from playing - I think I’ve been fit now four-and-a-half months but I’ve probably only played 250 or 300 minutes and that side of things are frustrating because you don’t want to last few years on your career to fizzle away from you, especially when you’re worked so hard to get to that point.

“It’s all new for me at the moment but I’m just enjoying life, enjoying football and playing with a smile on my face. What’s meant to be will be.”

Eddie Howe hasn't closed the door on Callum Wilson just yet

Wilson is set to have offers to remain in the Premier League should Newcastle opt to release him in the summer, with Everton and newbies Leeds United both keen on the 33-year-old.

Eddie Howe has left the door open for Callum Wilson, however, as we all know that Howe has a hard time letting go.

We've said since his return from injury earlier this year that if he can stay fit and knock in a couple of goals, then we're happy for him to stay on as long as another striker is signed. He's done the former, but he has just one game left to bag a Premier League goal. To be honest, that part isn't so important, as goals will come with fitness.

Whatever happens with Wilson, though, we absolutely, positively have to sign a striker in the off-season.
