Man United, Tottenham and West Ham have all been linked to the midfielder who has made four England appearances.
Manchester United are in a tough financial position due to the amount of money that they have spent over the past few seasons - with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules only magnifying those issues.
To save money elsewhere, the Red Devils could opt to look at the free agent market, with plenty of high-quality players set to be available ahead of the window opening. One such name has been strongly linked to Old Trafford.
Angel Gomes announces Lille departure
England international Angel Gomes came through the academy at Old Trafford, but after failing to break out in the first team, he moved to join French Ligue 1 side Lille in 2020 on a free transfer.
Since then, the 24-year-old has developed well, making over 130 appearances for Lille, scoring 10 goals and providing 19 assists. He even earned his first England cap last year when he was selected by interim manager Lee Carsley following Gareth Southgate’s departure.
Gomes’ contract at Lille is due to expire in June, and the midfielder has now announced that he is going to leave the club to become a free agent. He announced the decision on Instagram.
“After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it's time for me to say goodbye," he said. “This club has been more than just a team - it's been a family, a home, and a place that has shaped me both on and off the pitch.
"Like any journey, there were ups and downs, highs and lows, but I'm truly grateful to my team-mates and the fans for sticking with me throughout."
At this stage, it looks as though Gomes will return to England, and being available as a free agent, the 24-year-old could provide United with a bargain option to help add depth in midfield.
Fellow Lille star set to become a free agent
Gomes isn’t the only Lille FC star that is going to be available this summer, as striker Jonathan David is also going to be a free agent with several Premier League clubs interested in signing the Canadian.
Tottenham, Newcastle and Arsenal have all been previously linked to the Canadian striker too, and so he could follow Gomes to the Premier League, should the England international make the move back home.
