Bruno Fernandes has had a truly remarkable season despite the struggles faced by Manchester United in their worst Premier League run on record.

The club captain has been leading by example as the club’s top goalscorer for the season with 19 goals and 19 assists in 55 appearances.

As such, it’s no real surprise that the 30-year-old was handed the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the fourth time, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea’s record.

However, Fernandes could be set to hold a record of his own with the Europa League final only a day away.

United have a huge amount riding on the game, with a win over Tottenham Hotspur granting them qualification to the Champions League and with it £100 million in extra revenue.

The win could also be a massive boost for Fernandes who would then become the first United captain to win in cup finals in three consecutive seasons.

Bruno Fernandes has been the primary United captain for three full seasons now as the armband transitioned from Harry Maguire to the Portuguese midfielder in the throughout the 2020/21 season.

As such Fernandes has captained the side in their Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle in the 2022/23 season and their FA Cup final win over Manchester City in the 2023/24 season, both under Erik ten Hag.

Now, if United continue their unbeaten European run and beat Tottenham, Fernandes will hold the record despite United reaching finals in three consecutive years previously.

Between 1990 and 1992, and again in 2008 to 2010, United reached finals in three consecutive seasons, however the captain’s armband passed hands in both occasions, firstly between Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce, and more recently with Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra.
