Mock selections are coming to the forefront with only 37 days until the 2025 NBA Draft and the NBA Combine officially over. Across the dozens of early predictions for how the draft will unfold, including trading up, staying at 12, or packaging the pick to obtain a star player, one name is continually connected to the Chicago Bulls. ESPN’s latest mock draft reaffirmed that the most logical selection for the franchise at the 12th draft slot is becoming inevitable. Who do the experts see Chicago taking in the draft next month, and how can he help the organization find its way back to postseason play?
Derik Queen, Center, University Of Maryland
The 20-year-old center from the University of Maryland is the clear frontrunner for Chicago’s pick at number 12. Not only does he represent a young, elite talent, but he fills a much-needed void for the Bulls roster. Nikola Vucevic will turn 35 before the start of next season, and he’s entering the final year of his contract. He’s been the most commonly floated trade asset for the past few months and into this summer, with the most popular theory being that he’ll be dealt at the 2026 trade deadline in February to a contending roster. Bringing in Queen would provide an heir to the center position in Chicago, a spot that’s been controlled by Vucevic for the last five seasons.

Queen posted 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in his one season at Maryland, including a 27-point explosion in the Sweet Sixteen loss to the eventual champion Florida Gators. At 6’10” and 246 pounds, Queen’s transition to the NBA stage should be easier than most.
Building Around Buzelis, Giddey, Queen
The estimation of Chicago taking the center also revolves around the idea that they already have a few mainstays to help build the future’s core. Matas Buzelis is only 20, Josh Giddey is 22, and Coby White is 25. It’s safe to assume that the trio will be secured for the foreseeable future later this summer and will need a man in the middle to complete the framework. Queen would join one of the fastest-paced teams in the NBA with one of the youngest rosters.

The most significant note regarding Chicago’s draft choice at 12 is wondering if Queen will still be on the board when their selection arrives. Most pre-combine mock drafts had the youngster selected in the top ten, and some even saw the talented center being taken in the top five. How realistic is Queen’s fall to 12, and would Chicago be willing to trade up in the draft to grab him if necessary?
