During Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, ESPN’s Doris Burke called Shai Gilgeous-Alexander “a free throw merchant,” referencing NBA Twitter’s criticism of his foul-drawing style.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been a problem for defenses all season, but in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, where the Oklahoma City Thunder won against the Minnesota Timberwolves 114-88, it wasn't just the buckets that drew attention — it was the way he was getting them.

With multiple trips to the free-throw line early in the first quarter, ESPN commentator Doris Burke made a comment that immediately sparked reactions across social media.
“There’s a reason NBA Twitter calls him a free-throw merchant,” Burke said on the broadcast, echoing a sentiment that’s been floating around the league all year.
It’s a phrase many fans online have used to describe Shai's foul-drawing ability. While his skill in getting to the line is undeniable, critics argue that he relies too much on whistles — and some say he even flops.
But the numbers don’t completely support the narrative. The 26-year-old MVP finalist averaged 8.8 free throw attempts per game during the regular season.
In the playoffs, that number has slightly dipped to 8.7. Those are strong numbers, but far from the highest in the league.
Despite the criticism, Shai put on a show once again, finishing the game with a game-high 31 points, along with 9 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Game 2 is on May 23rd in OKC.
