Jamie Carragher tells Gary Neville a Newcastle United player he’d take at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville are big fans of Newcastle United’s midfield.

They have seen first hand what they are capable of this season, with Neville naming Bruno Guimaraes in his team of the season.

Jamie Carragher went the other way. Tonali was included in Carragher’s team, with the Liverpool legend citing the Italian midfielder’s change of position as the catalyst for Newcastle United’s success.

The 25-year-old has been untouchable since Eddie Howe altered his role, proving himself to be one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.

Jamie Carragher chooses between Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes

That change of position has changed Carragher’s opinion on Tonali.

In fact, Carragher would take the £55million superstar to Liverpool if he had the chance.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Stick To Football podcast on The Overlap YouTube channel, Neville asked a question about Newcastle United’s two top midfielders.

“I picked Guimaraes and he [Carragher] picked Tonali [in Monday Night Football’s team of the season],” he said.

“You said that when Tonali came in, Newcastle became a far better team. I think if Tonali was playing and it was Guimaraes who came in, it would be the same. Them two together are brilliant.

“If you could select one to come to your club out of those two, would it be Tonali or Guimaraes?”

From Liverpool’s perspective, Carragher replied: “Oh, Tonali.

“I’ve only said that this season since he went to that role.”

Sandro Tonali is not leaving Newcastle United

It is this kind of discussion that will infuriate Newcastle United fans. As soon as a player begins to thrive, pundits discuss the possibility of him playing elsewhere.

Although perhaps Newcastle should take this as a compliment. After all, Carragher believes that the Magpies have a player who is good enough for the Premier League champions.

But while this was merely a light-hearted debate between Neville and Carragher, the Toon Army do not need to worry about Tonali and his future on Tyneside.

It has been reported that Tonali is very happy at Newcastle United, amid speculation that clubs in Serie A would like to bring him back to Italy.

Newcastle struck gold when they signed Tonali, and will continue to reap the rewards. That will be to the envy of the rest of the Premier League.

It could be argued that Newcastle have the Premier League’s best midfield, with Tonali and Bruno joined by Joelinton. The latter is a key player too, despite not being as influential on the ball as the others.
