With three straight wins Aston Villa have timed their Premier League run to perfection and are on course qualify for a second successive Champions League campaign.

That’s according to Opta Analyst who have Villa finishing in fifth spot, above Chelsea who currently occupy the final qualifying position but who are predicted to drop down to sixth after their shoot-out with Nottingham Forest on the final day of the season.

Indeed both the Reds and the Blues go into that match at the City Ground believing victory will see them qualifying for Europe’s top competition.

However, Manchester City’s win over Bournemouth last night effectively means the scramble has gone from five clubs chasing three spots, to four battling for two.

Villa face Manchester United at Old Trafford, four days after the Red Devils’ Europa League final against Tottenham. Unai Emery’s men, by comparison, will be well-rested and know a win is likely to seal the deal.

Opta’s predicted table has Liverpool first, Arsenal second, City third, Newcastle – who play Everton at home – fourth and Villa fifth. They expect Chelsea and Forest to draw leaving both clubs on the outside looking in.

Indeed Villa are given an expected points total of 67.8 and therefore a 43 per cent chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Chelsea are tipped to finish sixth, with Forest seventh.
