Ruud van Nistelrooy is to step down as manager of relegated Leicester City, it is claimed this morning.
According to a Daily Mail, “exclusive”, City hierarchy are in talks with Russell Martin to take over at the relegated club.
The Mail reports: “Van Nistelrooy’s position has been left in limbo since the club’s relegation was confirmed. He has been ensconced in planning for the Championship campaign for much of the past two months, but has been frustrated by the silence from the club’s hierarchy.
“Mail Sport understands conversations with Martin have continued into this week and will be finalised imminently. It will be the 39-year-old’s first job since he was sacked by Southampton in December.”
Van Nistelrooy was handed the reins at the King Power Stadium on a two-and-a-half year deal after Steve Cooper was sacked as manager last November.
At the time, the Foxes were still outside the Premier League bottom three, but a run of poor form and results eventually confirmed their return to the Championship after just one season, the final nail driven into their coffin by a home defeat by champions Liverpool on April 20.
If claims around Martin’s imminent appointment are true, he will arrive with Premier League charges hanging over the club that could lead to a points deduction next season.
The club has successfully dodged punishment for similar charges relating to the 2022/23 season, but they now face a fresh legal battle.
The conclusion of the case involving the 2022/23 financial year has allowed the Premier League to open new proceedings following alleged breaches for the 2023/24 season.
City have received three fresh charges from the Premier League over last season's accounts, which will be judged by an independent commission and could see them begin the Championship campaign on negative points.
