Report: Berrada stopped Ruben Amorim leaving Man Utd, he was prepared to resign

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim was reportedly prepared to resign after their 3-1 home defeat to Brighton in January - before being talked out of the idea by those close to him in a move that would've sent shockwaves across the Premier League.

The loss to the Seagulls on home turf had seen United win just two of their previous nine Premier League games. Those wins only came thanks to late salvages in the 2-1 away win against rivals Manchester City, where Amad Diallo got on the scoresheet in the 90th minute - before the young Ivorian saved Amorim's bacon once again against Southampton with a late hat-trick to beat the lowly south coast side. But reports have stated that those wins may have counted for little, with Amorim reportedly considering walking out at the turn of the new year just three months into taking the job at the Theatre of Dreams.

The report on ESPN by Mark Ogden states that the pressure is on at United, with Wednesday evening's Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur being a '£100million lottery' for Amorim - with the Portuguese gaffer working 14-hour days at Carrington in a bid to turn their fortunes around.

However, it's not always been incredible dedication from the former Sporting boss, according to ESPN. It's believed that Amorim has had to be reassured by United chiefs that he will have backing to turn their poor form into strong form, with the task at hand proving to be more problematic than he first thought.

With that in mind, the report states that he became so 'disenchanted' with life at Old Trafford, that he was apparently prepared to resign after a shambolic 3-1 defeat to Brighton back in January - though he was talked out of such an idea by his associates.

Although there was no formal move for him to depart, it was acknowledged that he had to be reassured by senior Red Devils figures - including new CEO, Omar Berrada - that he would be trusted to turn their fortunes around. Despite Erik ten Hag's poor start prior to Amorim's arrival, the INEOS hierarchy remained unanimous in their support for the young coach that he is the right man for the job despite tough results on the pitch.

ESPN further report that Amorim has continually questioned himself, and there remains some uncertainty over the club's ability to overhaul the first-team squad to his liking.
