Spurs handed fresh boost for Man Utd Europa League final

The waiting is almost over and the time is now for Tottenham to end their trophy drought. At least that's what thousands of Spurs fans are hoping as the team walks out in San Mames in Bilbao tonight.

The Europa League final is here, with Spurs facing off against Premier League rivals Manchester United in the Spanish city.

It has been 17 years since a Tottenham captain last lifted a trophy above his head, with the wait going on 41 years since a European trophy was held aloft.

Spurs have history on the continent, becoming the first English team to ever win a European title when lifting the Cup Winners' Cup trophy in 1963.

The Lilywhites have lifted this trophy twice before, when it was called the UEFA Cup, in 1972 and 1984.

But since that '84 triumph, Spurs have lifted just three pieces of silverware - the FA Cup once and the League Cup twice. There have been other close calls, but no title.

There is little between the two sides heading into the clash in Bilbao on Wednesday night, with the two teams separated by just one point towards the bottom of the Premier League table, following horrific campaigns for both.

The Europa League offers a silver lining and while Spurs may have injury issues in midfield - with Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall all ruled out - there is positivity when it comes to the rest of the starting lineup.

Head coach Ange Postecoglou has been able to name his first-choice back line for both quarter-final legs with Eintracht Frankfurt and both semi-final legs with Bodo/Glimt.

Spurs have conceded just two goals in those matches and the quartet of Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie are likely to start in front of Guglielmo Vicario in San Mames on Wednesday night.

And that could prove crucial.

Tottenham have a strong record when all five have played together - something which will help them no end against United.

The quintet have been the starting backline in 30 matches since Postecoglou took over - nowhere near enough times really to call upon his best defensive unit.

In those 30 matches, Spurs have won 18 - a 60% win ratio, with six draws added on. Spurs have only lost six times with that back five, with one of those defeats coming when two of them were not on the pitch after receiving red cards against Chelsea last season.

Only three of those defeats have been this season - 1-0 to Arsenal and 1-0 to Crystal Palace as well as the surprise second half collapse against Brighton 3-2.

It is a good omen for Postecoglou and the Tottenham faithful to have the back five ready and available to play against United and it could be the difference between lifting the trophy and going home empty-handed yet again.
