Report: Liverpool want to sign 'elite' £60m star instead of Florian Wirtz, he's open to move

RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons would be open to joining Liverpool this summer, according to TEAMtalk.

The Premier League winners are believed to have earmarked the Dutch international as an alternative to their top target Florian Wirtz and have now received a positive update regarding Simons’ stance over a summer move to England.

The 22-year-old is reportedly ‘enthusiastic’ about joining a Premier League club after the season and would be keen to talk to interested parties, including the Reds.

Leipzig are open to Simons’ departure this summer, less than six months after signing him permanently from Paris Saint-Germain, if their asking price of close to £60m is met.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool boss Arne Slot is a particular admirer of Simons and rates his technical quality and maturity highly.

The ‘elite’ 22-year-old midfielder reportedly ‘ticks numerous boxes’ for his compatriot, as Simons’ versatility makes him an ‘ideal’ fit for Liverpool’s high-intensity system.

Simons, valued at £60m, would be a significantly cheaper option than Liverpool’s top target Wirtz, for whom Leverkusen are demanding around €150m (£126m) this summer.

Liverpool are believed to be among a host of European clubs keen on the Dutch international, who has blossomed into one of the best attacking midfielders on the continent during his time in Germany.

Liverpool could end up making at least two signings from the Bundesliga this summer, as they are making steady progress on a deal for Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong.

The Reds have identified the Dutch defender as their primary choice to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and are expected to pay his £30m release clause.
