Just eleven days to run until the transfer window opens on 1st June and West Ham have big business to conduct in their squad rebuild. Last summer’s expensively assembled but mismatched squad was created by the triumvirate of Sullivan, Lopetegui and Tim [Steidten](https://www.claretandhugh.info/flop-fulkrug-out-to-prove-steidten-was-right-all-along/) (more of him later today~) at the cost of £140 million. This summer it is the new trio of Potter Macaulay and Sullivan who will carry out the rebuild.
Knowing David Sullivan’s penchant for a bargain, especially with players working with specific Hammers-friendly management companies, we’ve been waiting for some of the usual suspects who are free agents come June to be mentioned in the same breath as West Ham: In particular the worry has been concerning West Ham going after one well-known free agent now 33, in the persona of Newcastle’s Callum Wilson.
Chairman David Sullivan is known to be a Wilson admirer and a free transfer – with just a modest ‘signing -on fee’ could just bee too tempting for West Ham’s boss to ignore.
You’d Hope that after the Fullkrug experience the Hammers have learned their lesson about buying past their prime thirty – something injury prone players.
The talk is all of new era West Ham bringing in young, up and coming players. But there was still a mighty sense of relief to day to read _f[ootballinsider247.com’s](https://www.footballinsider247.com/leeds-united-explore-callum-wilson-deal-after-sources-reveal/)_ article confirming the newly promoted sides are ‘_exploring’ a deal for Callum Wilson:_
_“It is believed Leeds feel a swoop for the veteran could be smart business as they prepare for a return to the Premier League next term.”_
Probably good business for both sides and of course it means Wilson is guaranteed his customary London Stadium goal: But better a season for Leeds than another thirty-something on the West Ham payroll. West Ham have only just said goodbye to Danny Ings – who managed to stay fit for most of his career just came to London Stadium well past his PL sell any date: Let’s not repeat the whole sorry saga.
