Report: Amorim and Wilcox disagree over Man Utd deal to sign "exceptional" star this summer

Ruben Amorim and Jason Wilcox reportedly disagree over which profile of striker Manchester United should be targeting this summer amid links to Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres.

A deal for Matheus Cunha is close to completion, with the Red Devils set to trigger the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward's £62.5m release clause once the season concludes this weekend. The Brazilian will become the club's first of what is expected to be many summer signings.

Graeme Bailey reports to United in Focus that United's striker search has led to opposing views over the right fit for the number nine role. Ipswich Town's Delap and Sporting CP's Gyokeres are the club's top targets, but officials have yet to decide which profile is best.

Delap, 22, is United's top target in their footballing department and technical director Wilcox is said to be "convinced" he's the "best option". The English forward is available for just £30m following Ipswich's relegation, and Wilcox knows him from working at Manchester City.

The Red Devils have reportedly held face-to-face talks with Delap over a move to Old Trafford. They face competition from Chelsea for his signature, but are viewed as frontrunners.

Amorim and his coaching team think a ready-made number nine would best serve United, given the club's struggles in front of goal this season. The Portuguese tactician has put Gyokeres' name forward, and there's said to be "hope" that the Swede could still choose Old Trafford over a move to heavily linked Arsenal.

Gyokeres, 26, has been touted for a potential reunion with Amorim ever since the latter replaced Erik ten Hag last November. His decision to do so could rest on how United fare in their Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur (May 21), with Champions League qualification on the line.

The former Coventry City man is likely to cost over £50m, but is a proven goalscorer, while Delap has a younger profile with room to grow, but is deemed "exceptional" by Glenn Murray. The club would ideally swoop for both amid question marks over Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho's futures.
