Newcastle United remain focused on Burnley’s James Trafford as their leading target to strengthen the goalkeeping position this summer, according to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.
During a recent Q&A, Waugh confirmed that “Trafford is the top goalkeeper target as things stand,” although he stressed that the club are still assessing other options.
Trafford, 22, was the subject of a failed bid from Newcastle in June 2024, but Waugh noted that “their interest has never gone away.” Since then, the England youth international has impressed with Burnley in the Championship, raising both his value and reputation.
Waugh added that “an agreement is still to be struck with newly promoted Burnley,” meaning Newcastle are keeping tabs on alternative candidates in case a deal cannot be reached.
Regarding other names, Waugh said “Ramsdale is someone Howe knows well,” citing the Newcastle manager’s history with the Arsenal goalkeeper during their time at Bournemouth. Newcastle explored a move for Ramsdale “early last year before they knew how Nick Pope had physically recovered from his injury.”
Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher was mentioned by the reader, but Waugh clarified, “I have not heard that he is high on the wanted list.”
Despite the club’s clear interest in Trafford, Waugh made it clear that Pope remains an important figure at St James’ Park.
“Even if Trafford arrives… he will face a battle with Pope to claim the gloves,” Waugh wrote.
Meanwhile, making room for Trafford or whoever else arrives this summer, Martin Dubravka and Odysseas Vlachodimos are both potential departures.
