Report: Wolves enter transfer race for player Steve Bull thinks is 'top-class', he's available…

Tuesday’s defeat against Crystal Palace only highlighted the need for Wolves to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window.

Wolves were beaten 4-2 by Palace in the league, their third defeat on the spin after a run of six straight victories.

The Old Gold can finish 14th or as low as 17th heading into their final day fixture against Brentford, with Vitor Pereira’s men playing for their pride and extra Premier League prize money.

After the loss at Selhurst Park, Pereira sent a subtle transfer hint to Fosun, urging improvements to be in multiple positions.

One position in the squad they’re looking to provide competition for is in midfield. Wolves have been linked to several players before the window has even opened, and one of those is available on a free transfer.

Wolves and Everton in transfer race for Josh Brownhill

Wolves are long-term admirers of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill. The 29-year-old, who Gary O’Neil tried to sign for the club previously, sees his contract expire next month.

The newly promoted Clarets have offered him a new deal, but as it stands, he will depart upon the expiration of his deal.

According to Turkish outlet Gune Bakis, Trabzonspor are looking to add Brownhill to their squad but they’re joined in their pursuit by Wolves and Premier League rivals Everton.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

Predominantly a box-to-box midfielder but also capable of playing behind the striker, the ‘top-class’ Brownhill, as dubbed by legend Steve Bull, enjoyed a career-best campaign in front of goal in 2024/25 with 18 goals and six assists to his name in the Championship.

It was his notable contributions, including a brace against Sheffield United in April, that helped Burnley clinch automatic promotion.

Now, with his side returning to the big time, they’ll hope he renews his contract and commits his future, but with time ticking, that looks increasingly unlikely.

Vitor Pereira would love the profile of Brownhill

Defeat to Crystal Palace on Tuesday night demonstrated how much Wolves missed Joao Gomes in midfield for his relentless energy and incredible tackling ability.

He’s formed an excellent partnership with countryman Andre, though Pereira does need to sign someone to throw the cat among the pigeons, and Brownhill could be that player.

After a remarkable campaign in front of goal, the Englishman is ready to challenge for playing time at a club like Wolves, which could see him operate as a deep-lying midfielder or as a number 10.

Realistically, the Wanderers currently lack goal threat from deep, relying on the brilliance of Matheus Cunha or the hulking figure of Jorgen Strand Larsen to bail them out.

Wolves need a source of goals, someone who can ghost into the box from deep and get on the end of chances. Brownhill did just that on countless occasions in the second tier, and on a free transfer, Pereira could do far worse than him.
