Paul Scholes has suggested that one former Manchester United player had “every chance at the club” before Erik ten Hag offloaded him from Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s reign as Manchester United manager finally came to an end in the 2024-25 Premier League campaign after the Dutchman was sacked last October.
The 55-year-old had entered his third season as United manager after Ineos and Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe handed him a contract extension last summer.
However, Ten Hag oversaw a difficult start to the current season and the former Ajax and United boss was dismissed in 2024 amid the Red Devils’ poor run of form.
Ten Hag’s exit from Old Trafford paved the way for Ruben Amorim to become the sixth permanent United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era of the club.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was assistant manager under Ten Hag at United, was temporarily installed as interim manager ahead of Ruben Amorim’s arrival.
The 48-year-old United legend oversaw a four-match managerial spell in the Old Trafford dugout before the Red Devils snapped up Amorim from Sporting CP.

Paul Scholes’ clear-cut verdict on Dean Henderson after Erik ten Hag sold the former Man Utd player to Crystal Palace
Dean Henderson came through the Manchester United youth academy and was left to play second fiddle to Red Devils legend David de Gea at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old England international broke into the United first team and Dean Henderson made only 29 appearances during his time at the Premier League club.
Henderson was unable to permanently succeed David de Gea as the United No 1 after the 34-year-old former Spain international left as a free agent in 2023.
Erik ten Hag was in charge at Old Trafford at the time and Henderson was allowed to leave United in 2023 and was sold to Crystal Palace for an initial £15m fee.
Henderson earned praise last Saturday for his stunning performance in Crystal Palace’s sensational 1-0 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
Speaking in his TNT Sports column, Paul Scholes said “Even though he put on a man of the match performance in the FA Cup final, I think Henderson was let go at the right time by Manchester United.
“I think he was given every chance at the club. I remember there was a spell where he had a great chance to take the No. 1 shirt, and he didn’t take it. He made three or four mistakes, which cost him in the end.
“Right now, he’s at the right club for his ability and I don’t think he’s good enough for a club like United.
“He’s a good goalkeeper and the timing was right for him to leave Old Trafford and enjoy his football somewhere else.”

Paul Scholes speaks out on Man Utd star Andre Onana after Dean Henderson’s heroics for Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final
Andre Onana was seen by Ten Hag as David de Gea’s successor and even Scholes admitted that he preferred the current United No 1 over Dean Henderson.
“In terms of Onana, there are times when he hasn’t been great, but he has experience playing in finals and I thought he was very good for Inter Milan against Manchester City in the Champions League final a couple of years ago,” Scholes continued.
“If you ask me which goalkeeper I’d prefer to have in a final, I’d stick with Onana over Henderson at this point.”
Andre Onana played under Ten Hag at Ajax before United signed the 29-year-old Cameroon international from Inter Milan in 2023 in a deal worth £47.2m.
