
It’s getting to that time of year where Premier League pundits are sharing their team of the seasons are we approach the final weekend of 2024/25.
It’s been a season where Champions Liverpool ran away with it and the three relegated sides looked nailed on many month ago, but the race for Europe is going down to the wire.
Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are all pushing for a top-five finish and Champions League football, while Brighton and Brentford battle for 8th spot and a place in the Europa Conference League this Sunday.
But in amongst all of that, two of Sky Sports’ top pundits have revealed their team of the season selections and end-of-season awards, where four Mags received special praise.
Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have both named Alexander Isak in their team of the season selection for 2024/25, while each pundit has picked a different Newcastle United midfielder in their star XI.
Bruno Guimaraes makes Neville’s 11, while Sandro Tonali has been selected by Carragher. In amongst the two teams also featuring former Toon stopper Matz Sels and summer target Bryan Mbeumo following his best season yet at Brentford.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville described Bruno as a “great player” and praised his “influence” on this Newcastle team, while Carragher feels Tonali’s move to that No 6 role has inspired Newcastle to the season we’ve had under Eddie Howe, hailing the Italian’s dominant cup final display.
**Neville’s XI:** Sels – Munoz, Milenkovic, Van Dijk, Kerkez – Gravenberch, Tielemans, Guimaraes – Salah, Isak, Mbeumo.
**Carragher’s XI:** Allison – Munoz, Milenkovic, Van Dijk, Lewis-Skelly – Mac Allister, Tonali, Rice – Salah, Isak, Gibbs-White.
In another section of Monday night’s show, Neville and Carragher also discussed other end-of-season awards, such as best player, best young player, best signing, most improved and biggest overachievers, to name a few.
Neville picked out Eddie Howe for the best coaching performance four his cup final masterclass over Liverpool’s Arne Slot, while Carragher opted for Andoni Iraola’s game plan in Bournemouth’s 4-1 win at St James’ Park in January.
The ‘favourite game’ section also featured Newcastle, where Neville went for the 2025 Carabao Cup final, although it felt a tad harsh on eight-goal, 12-assist Jacob Murphy that he wasn’t even discussed in the ‘most improved player’ debate, where both pundits were set on Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch.
