Leicester City appear to have made a decision over the future of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy as they prepare for life back in the Championship.
The Man United legend has been in charge at the King Power Stadium since November, joining the club just weeks after his exit as interim manager at Old Trafford. His time at Leicester hasn’t been as successful as the club and former striker would have hoped.
A run of 18 losses in 20 games saw the club relegated back down to the Championship. Their fate was sealed last month following a 1-0 loss against Liverpool.
Since then, the club have had a bit of an upturn in form. A 2-0 win against Ipswich was the Foxes’ third game unbeaten, following a win over Southampton and a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.
That, however, has not been enough to stop speculation over Van Nistelrooy’s future at the club. The Daily Mail reports that the Dutchman is ‘primed to leave the club’ with Leicester already in talks over his replacement.
The report adds that Leicester have held talks with former Southampton boss Russell Martin over taking over at the club and an appointment could be concluded in the ‘coming days’. The 39-year-old was sacked by the Saints back in December.
There has been uncertainty over Van Nistelrooy’s future for some time. Last month he said that he would like a decision on his future made “the sooner the better.”
Earlier this month he revealed that he had not heard an update from the hierarchy. “I spoke about the initiative months and months ago in conversations with the ownership and leadership at the club,” he said.
“Now for weeks I don’t have news and my focus is on the next training session and the next game.
“In the interests of the club, it’s very important and the sooner the better. I said that as well. But my job is the responsibility of the football part of this football club.
“It’s important that I connect with the players and vice-versa, that they are buying into the way of playing and performing as good as we can towards the end of the season. It’s from day to day and game to game.”
