Bruno Guimaraes drops cryptic 16-word post as Newcastle United hero eyes Champions League…

Newcastle United are gearing up for a Champions League shootout on Sunday - and skipper Bruno Guimaraes has dropped this cryptic post on socials.

It’s almost time. Newcastle United are edging closer to their day of reckoning. While not winning or achieving Champions League football on Sunday, where the Magpies take on Everton, will not define a season glistening with silver, it will define just how much Newcastle have to spend in the summer. And for that reason, a win is crucial.

One player who has already written his name in the history books of Newcastle United is Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian vowed to become a legend at United when he signed, few believed him when he talked of achieving great things on Tyneside. But here we are, and he’s three points and 90 minutes away from leading the side to arguably their greatest season in a century - definitely in the modern era.

Newcastle United in the Champions League

Bruno and his United teammates have unfinished business in the competition. They haven’t played in the Europa League, the consolation prize on Sunday if they fail to better the results of any or all of Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea, back in 2013, but it is their recent dalliance with Europe’s premier cup competition that has whetted the appetite.

In 2023/24 Eddie Howe’s men crashed out of the competition at the first offering, having been handed arguably one of the hardest groups the competition has ever seen. They won just once, controversially, of course, and despite being in the top two with just twenty minutes to play, they slipped to fourth as AC Milan, then Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund bettered them.

So, for Bruno & Co, getting back there is personal. And ahead of the encounter, Guimaraes has been using his social media to portray a message of calm and positivity ahead of the weekend encounter with David Moyes’ Everton.

Taking to his Instagram account, Bruno posted a pic to his story showing a little girl with a teddy bear in the rain, accompanied by the words: “Nao existe dia ruim pra quem entende que acordar ja e vitoria.”

Obviously that one is in his mother tongue, Portuguese. Translated into English, it reads: “There is no bad day for those who understand that waking up is already a victory.”

Cryptic? Maybe. But it’s clear the player is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, as he always seems to, heading into what feels like a white hot weekend of football as five teams look to claim three available places in the Champions League for next season.
