Plenty of players have come and gone at Manchester United over the years, with many touted as future stars from a young age.

While a handful have broken through to achieve success – such as Anthony Elanga, now thriving at Nottingham Forest, others have found the path to senior football more difficult.

Some have moved on permanently in search of regular action.

While others have taken the loan route to gain valuable experience.

Not every move pays off, and even promising loan spells can hit bumps along the road.

Tom Lawrence officially released by Rangers FC

One such case is former Manchester United academy product Tom Lawrence, who has now officially been released by Rangers.

The Scottish giants confirmed the departure of Lawrence via their club website, as part of their retained list ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Lawrence, who joined Rangers in the summer of 2022, initially made a strong impact – scoring three goals in his first three games and helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

However, injury disrupted his momentum, forcing him to miss a full year of action.

Despite that setback, the 31-year-old battled back to contribute across two seasons in Glasgow, racking up 60 appearances and nine goals, including key contributions in Rangers’ Europa League campaigns.

In total, he made 69 appearances for the Ibrox club across three seasons.

Rangers also confirmed the departure of several other players, including Leon Balogun and Ianis Hagi – the latter ending a four-year spell that included Europa League heroics and a title-winning campaign.

Loan players Vaclav Cerny, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Rafael Fernandes will also return to their parent clubs.

A statement from Rangers read: “Everyone at Ibrox and the Rangers Training Centre thanks the departing players sincerely for their contributions to the football club and wish them all the very best for their future careers.”

It was United whom the attacking midfielder began his senior career with, however, arriving in their youth ranks from Everton in 2002.

Lawrence’s one and only senior appearance for the Red Devils came on May 6th, 2014, against Hull City.

He played 70 minutes of the 3-1 win before being subbed off for Man Utd great Ryan Giggs, in what was the latter’s final appearance for the club.
