Both sides started strongly but struggled early on to break out of their traditional 11-a-side habits. Despite a brace from Giugliano, Man Utd secured a 3-2 win.
The first half started out well-balanced. A big opportunity came for AS Roma when Le Tissier miscalculated a back pass to Tullis-Joyce, but Roma failed to capitalise on it. The players on both sides struggled to get rid of their 11v11 habits, not yet taking full advantage of the absence of the offside rule..
Manchester United finally managed to open the scoring in the 12th minute. Cisoko failed to clear the ball in the box, it fell kindly to Clinton, but goalkeeper Ceasar saved her shot. However, Celin Bizet was ready to tap in the rebound.
Marc Skinner’s side get the hang of it after their first goal, doubling the lead only two minutes later. Janssen and Toone linked up in a short corner, and the England international found the far corner.
Just before halftime, AS Roma pulled one back when Giugliano broke through and fired it past Tullis-Joyce.
Giugliano brought Roma level with an outstanding shot from outside the box. Roma couldn’t enjoy the equalizer for long as Malard flicked Clinton through on goal, and she chipped it over goalkeeper Ceaser, scoring the 3-2.
Roma needed another goal to force extra time, but Manchester United grew into the game. Terland could have scored the 4-2 when Mannion found her at the near post, but she sent her effort wide. A big chance followed for Le Tissier with just three minutes remaining, but neither side found the net again—securing the win for Manchester United.
