Darwin Nunez Liverpool exit hits stumbling block as Euro giants enter transfer race - report

Darwin Nunez is a wanted man as rumours of his Liverpool exit continue to surface.

Nunez has long been linked with an Anfield exit, as teams from Saudi Arabia all threw their hats into the ring to acquire his services during the January transfer window.

The Uruguay international has failed to live up to expectations once again this term, resulting in him being left out of Arne Slot’s plans.

However, as he is only 25 years old, there’s still plenty of time for him to come good, which is likely why Atletico Madrid have now entered the race for the attacker.

Atletico Madrid and Liverpool cannot agree on a transfer fee for Darwin Nunez

As per reports from Spanish outlet Cadena SER, signing a striker is ‘essential’ for Diego Simeone this summer.

The report adds that discussions between Nunez and Atletico have already commenced, with the only ‘issue’ being that Liverpool and Atletico are struggling to negotiate a deal.

Cadena added that Nunez would be ‘delighted’ to join the La Liga giants, with everything already being discussed between the club and the player.

However, the report does suggest that a move for Nunez will largely rest upon whether Angel Correa exits the Metropolitano this summer.

Darwin Nunez leaving Liverpool is the best thing for both parties

Nunez is quite the enigma. There are times when he seems like one of the most competent players on the pitch, but more often than not, he’s left a lot to be desired.

Cody Gakpo has been the man chosen by Slot to lead his line this term, and the difference between the two is night and day.

Gakpo is much calmer on the ball and, this season especially, has been in much better form in the final third.

Granted, Nunez may have that little bit of extra pace to burst past defenders if required, but when there’s no end product, pace is of little value.

It’s become more evident over the course of the 2024-25 campaign that Liverpool fans have had enough of Nunez’s performances, so if Slot can get a decent fee for his services, it’s a move he should sanction.

The money earned from the sale of Nunez could help boost the Liverpool manager’s squad massively and perhaps set him up to bring the Premier League title back to Anfield next season.

Because, at the end of the day, that’s likely going to be the top priority for Slot and his men next season.
