Newcastle United have increased confidence of extending Alexander Isak’s contract if they secure Champions League football, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies need to pick up three points at home against Everton on Sunday (25 May) to secure their place in next season’s competition.

Newcastle remain in contract talks with Isak, 25, with his current deal set to expire in June 2028.

Eddie Howe has refused to give any guarantee over the Sweden international remaining at St James’ Park into the 2025-26 campaign.

Newcastle close in on Isak boost

Arsenal and Liverpool have been eyeing a move for Isak but are unlikely to match Newcastle’s demands of a British-record fee this summer.

As such, sources say Newcastle will get a welcome boost in negotiations with the forward if they can secure Champions League football.

Talks previously stalled in October of last year (2024) with the Magpies having to go without continental football in the 2024-25 campaign.

Isak has scored 27 goals and notched six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions this term.

The former Real Sociedad star is currently on the sidelines with a groin issue – which will potentially keep him out of action for the crucial Everton clash.

He cost a fee of around £63million when he arrived at St James’ Park in 2022.

Newcastle could sign an upgrade on Jacob Murphy this summer.

Newcastle plot three key additions

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (12 May) that Newcastle are planning to back Howe by strengthening his squad in a busy transfer window.

Among their priority targets are the additions of a new centre-back, right-winger and goalkeeper amid concerns about their current options.

Football Insider revealed in February that Newcastle want to sign a right-winger as their top priority despite the performances of Jacob Murphy.
