A Manchester United matchday street trader has been fined by magistrates for running a stall without a licence.

Andrew Hancock, 42, of Davenham Road, Sale, was caught on three occasions by officers for contravening the borough's street trading policy.

He was selling football scarves, pin badges, and memorabilia near Old Trafford on September 25, October 19, and October 30 last year, when Manchester United played games against Twente, Brentford, and Leicester.

He persistently ignored warnings from licensing enforcement officers that he required a proper licence for his stall at the corner of Sir Matt Busby Way and Chester Road.

Manchester City Council staff had tried to help him comply by providing advice on applying for the appropriate licence.

However, Mr Hancock declined their assistance, telling officers: "There’s nothing you can do."

He believed that selling on private land meant he did not require a street trading licence.

Cllr Rose Thompson, executive member for communities and safety, said: "Our street trading policy exists to protect consumers, support legitimate traders, and ensure public spaces are safe and well managed.

"I hope this sends a clear message to others."
