'Obviously Newcastle are special': Simon Jordan hits out at media coverage after Carabao Cup…

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan is unhappy with the way the media covered Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory.

Newcastle United ended one of the most infamous trophy droughts in English football back in March. Indeed, a brilliant Newcastle won the Carabao Cup by beating Liverpool in the final.

A few months on, Crystal Palace won the FA Cup final by beating Manchester City. It means that the two domestic cup honours this season have gone to relatively unfancied teams, rather than the usual suspects.

Still, ex-Eagles owner Jordan is unhappy with the difference in media coverage between the two cup victories.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan suggested Palace’s victory – the first major trophy success in their history – did not get the same amount of media love as Newcastle’s win.

That is despite, in Jordan’s view, that the FA Cup is more “meaningful” a tournament than the Carabao Cup.

He sarcastically suggested that Newcastle’s status as a “special” club meant that those in the media paid a lot more attention to that than Palace winning the FA Cup.

“I did expect the same media love-in for Palace winning the more meaningful tournament but we didn’t get it,” he said.

“Because obviously Newcastle are a special club and they must be given special media love-ins.”

Clearly, he’s emotionally invested in the south London club but that does feel somewhat harsh. Both cup wins should be treated as the major successes they are.

Alan Shearer compares Newcastle United and Crystal Palace fans after cup wins

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was at Wembley to see the Toon win the cup as a supporter, while he commentated on Palace’s victory for the BBC.

Shearer said Palace fans reminded him of the Newcastle support at Wembley, such was their desire to get their team over the line against a more-fancied opponent.

Interestingly, Newcastle target Marc Guehi is still expected to leave Crystal Palace despite winning the FA Cup.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle can land the defender but that would be some statement of intent heading into the summer transfer window.
