The Red Devils had a ticket allocation of around 15,000 for the approxiamtely-53,000 capacity San Mames Stadium. There were certainly plenty more watching from across Bilbao with stories of supporters travelling by train, plane and even sailboat to northern Spain. It was estimated by some in attendance that up to 25,000 United supporters could have been inside the venue.

The result has huge ramifications for both clubs, as the two teams look to put a tough domestic campaign behind them by winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League.

It was a first half of few chances in Bilbao, with both clubs looking nervous at times. Amad Diallo flashed a shot across goal early on but despite some set-pieces for both clubs, nothing much came of them.

That was until, an own goal from Luke Shaw put Spurs ahead with three minutes of the first half remaining. Pape Sarr’s cross was miscued by Brennan Johnson but hit off Shaw and squirmed past Andre Onana.
