Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP win makes him eligible for a $380 million extension in 2026—$87 million more than he could sign for this offseason.
Oklahoma City Thunder leader Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the 2024–25 NBA MVP, and this individual achievement is setting him up for an even bigger payday in the near future.
According to ESPN's Bobby Marks, Gilgeous-Alexander met the supermax criteria (making All-NBA in two of the past three seasons) last offseason, but was not yet eligible to sign the deal because he had not reached the required number of years in the league.
Now that he is eligible this summer, SGA can sign a four-year, $293 million extension with OKC.
However, thanks to winning MVP—a distinction that, like an All-NBA selection, qualifies a player for enhanced terms—he will be eligible in the 2026 offseason to sign a five-year, $380 million extension instead.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the league in scoring this past regular season, averaging 32.7 points, along with 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.
He becomes the first Canadian to win NBA MVP since Steve Nash, who earned the honor in back-to-back seasons in 2004–05 and 2005–06. No other Canadian has ever won the award.
