The Red Devils had a ticket allocation of around 15,000 for the approxiamtely-53,000 capacity San Mames Stadium. There were certainly plenty more watching from across Bilbao with stories of supporters travelling by train, plane and even sailboat to northern Spain. It was estimated by some in attendance that up to 25,000 United supporters could have been inside the venue.
Unfortunately for those who made the journey, Spurs emerged as 1-0 victors on a night of little quality. The Red Devils will have no European football next season with their final route to the Champions League closed.
It was a first half of few chances in Bilbao, with both clubs looking nervous at times. Amad Diallo flashed a shot across goal early on but despite some set-pieces for both clubs, nothing much came of them.
That was until, a goal from Brennan Johnson put Spurs ahead with three minutes of the first half remaining. Pape Sarr’s cross was miscued by Johnson but hit off Shaw and squirmed past Andre Onana. It was initially marked as an own goal from Shaw before being credited to Johnson.
In the second half, Rasmus Hojlund had a header cleared off the line while Shaw saw a late header kept out and Casemiro flashed a overhead kick wide.
