Harry Maguire’s five-word dig at Cristian Romero during heated Tottenham vs Man Utd clash

Harry Maguire's five-word message to Cristian Romero during a heated Europa League final clash on Wednesday night has now been revealed. Tottenham squeezed past Manchester United at the San Mames Stadium with a 1-0 win, finally ending a 17-year trophy drought. Both Premier League giants were desperate for silverware to mask the blushes of a catastrophic domestic campaign.

The north London side currently sit 17th in the league, with the Red Devils - now easily one of the worst iterations in the club's history - just place spot above in 16th. The result of pitting two wounded heavyweights together was a cagey, uninspiring affair in Europe’s second-tier competition. But a Luke Shaw own goal was enough to separate the sides, allowing Ange Postecoglou to deliver on his promise of silverware in his second season.

The match wasn’t short of scuffles and sparks, particularly in the second half as United threw the kitchen sink and Spurs battened down the hatches. But the early signs of needle came in the first half, when Maguire and Romero were caught exchanging heated verbals. Now, the five-word barb from the United defender has been revealed.

Maguire fired a dig at Romero while he was on the ground during Wednesday night's final as the Argentine was grounded after clashing with Man United's Rasmus Hojlund. Romero remained on the ground, holding his hands over his face, and the United centre-half wandered over and appeared to mock the World Cup winner as he remained on the turf. He reportedly told the Tottenham defender, as per the Mirror:

"You're the captain, come on!"

The United defender has served as captain of both his club and country previously, and thus knows all about the importance of keeping his cool in precious situations. But the animosity between the two never faded throughout the night, and they could be seen squaring up to each other at full-time. Watch the incident below:

Tottenham must now build on their triumph after sealing a backdoor entry into next season's Champions League. Their win made United's road to redemption that much longer in the process, and Amorim's side will not be in European competition of any kind next term for the first time since the 2014/15 campaign.
