Jamie Carragher could not resist a dig at Manchester United after their Europa League final defeat

Brennan Johnson’s goal was enough for Spurs to clinch victory and qualify for the Champions League. United went into the game undefeated in the Europa League but offered little as they attempted to lift the trophy and secure European football next campaign.

Ruben Amorim’s side are facing a 16th-placed finish in the Premier League, as they end their campaign against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Many of United’s problems this season were laid bare and one man who seemed to enjoy the defeat was ex-Anfield ace Carragher.

Carragher and colleague Gary Neville are not shy of aiming digs at each other’s clubs and this time it was the ex-defender’s turn to poke fun.

Jamie Carragher and Mo Salah react to Manchester United’s loss to Tottenham

It is a reference to a famous quote from Sir Alex Ferguson, who used the phrase “lads it’s Tottenham” to motivate his United team against Spurs. Speaking about the short speech, former United captain Roy Keane previously recounted: “I thought I knew what the group might need, that we didn’t need a big team talk.

“It was Tottenham at home. I thought please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what Tottenham is about, they are nice and tidy but we’ll do them. He came in and said: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’, and that was it. Brilliant.”

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah also reacted to the result, issuing a congratulations to Ange Postecoglou, who said earlier this season he “always” wins in his second season.

Salah said: “He did say he’d win in his second season. Congratulations!”

Rio Ferdinand reacts to Man United loss

Speaking on TNT Sports, former United defender Rio Ferdiand branded the season a “disaster” for the Red Devils. He said: “A distaster of a season ending on a bad note, but I dont think Man Utd did enough to deserve it.

“There was no real cutting edge in the Man Utd team. All that sustained pressure, the goalkeeper [Guglielmo Vicario] made one save in the whole game - you can't expect to win a trophy when you're a bit reserved.”
