Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah sent out a brilliant message to Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou following their Europa League final victory over Manchester United.

A timely goal from Brennan Johnson just before the break clinched the win on Wednesday, with Postecoglou's squad then putting on a defensive masterclass to secure the triumph and break a 17-year trophy-less streak.

Following Spurs' victory in Bilbao, Postecoglou's prophecy of claiming silverware in his second season has materialised, with Salah unexpectedly remarking on this achievement on X shortly after the full-time whistle, writing: "He did say he'd win in his second season. Congratulations!"

Salah has relished playing against Tottenham this term, netting goals both at home and away with an aggregate scoreline of 11-4 favouring Liverpool.

The latter goal came in the Reds' title triumph, but his comment hints at a soft spot for the London club. It could also stem from the rivalry between United and Liverpool, with Salah particularly enjoying encounters against the Old Trafford side.

Although the match was not the most thrilling spectacle, Spurs showed decisive quality at either end of the pitch, with Johnson wreaking havoc after a Pape Sarr delivery and the ball subsequently being nudged over the line. Amad posed some threat, but Destiny Udogie put in a solid performance to neutralise his influence on the match, reports Football London.

Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario then produced moments of magic to thwart Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw, each making significant contributions to keep United at bay.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur put in a relentless shift in the midfield, with Kevin Danso, Djed Spence, and Archie Gray stepping in to help secure the remarkable win.

Following the triumph, Tottenham players were seen collecting their winners' medals, with Lucas Bergvall and James Maddison joining in the celebrations in full kit despite missing out due to injuries.

"I'm so happy right now," declared match-winner Johnson post-match. "This season hasn't been good at all but not one of us players care about that now," he shared with TNT Sports.

"This club hasn't won a trophy for 17 years, it means so much. "All the fans get battered, we get battered for not winning anything so we had to get the first one in a while today. ""Ever since I came here it's been 'Tottenham are a good team but they can't get it done'.

"But we got it done.

"Tottenham Hotspur finishing 17th in the Premier League is not good enough but we've had an unbelievable Europa run. "I thought our fans had the edge on the United fans.."

The scenes were capped off with Son Heung-min hoisting the Europa League trophy, marking his first piece of silverware with the club, in the same year that former Spurs striker Harry Kane celebrated lifting the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich.
