Ruben Amorim made that bold claim that he is willing to leave Manchester United without compensation after the team lost the Europa League final to top-flight rivals Tottenham in Bilbao.

Both teams have struggled in the Premier League this season, sitting 16th and 17th in the standings respectively.

As a result, European competition has represented not just a chance at redemption and silverware, but a necessary lifeline for next season thanks to the Champions League place the winner receives.

But Manchester United were unable to rescue their ailing campaign as they floundered 1-0 behind Spurs for most of the match, with Andre Onana and Luke Shaw both at fault for Brennan Johnson's first-half goal.

Amorim has been realistic about his side's flaws since joining the Old Trafford side at the end of last year, but in the wake of the defeat on Wednesday evening, he was open about his desire to leave if it is decided he should not stay at the club.

'If the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy I will go tomorrow with no compensation,' Amorim said at full-time.
