Sir Jim Ratcliffe exchanged a brief embrace with Ruben Amorim after Manchester United's defeat in the Europa League final.

United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday night, falling short after a goal from Brennan Johnson at the end of the first half at the Estadio de San Mames.

Amorim's side never truly looked like getting back into the game and Tottenham clinched their first trophy since 2008. After full-time, United's players were forced to collect their runner-up medals and a disappointed Ratcliffe was on the podium to hand the consolation medal to Amorim.

Ratcliffe briefly embraced Amorim and the pair were pictured with glum-looking faces.

Amorim was Ineos' first appointment at Old Trafford following Ratcliffe's investment in the club in 2024, and the British billionaire has previously given Amorim his public backing.

In March, Ratcliffe spoke about Amorim in an interview with the BBC and said: "If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest.

"I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He's an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time."

Amorim was asked about those quotes and said: "I think we are really blunt and honest with each other, we are quite similar in that. I always felt the support of the board, especially Sir Jim."

United's head coach is expected to be safe, regardless of losing the Europa League final, although some supporters have questioned whether he is the right man to take the club forward.

Amorim was appointed from Sporting Lisbon in November. He has overseen a disastrous Premier League campaign, which has seen United sit just above the relegation places.
